MySkins Resources

MySkins can use resource packages to add resources to skins or containers. Resources include background images, banners, overlays, patterns, borders, icons and more. The collection of resources in a specific folder structure that follows a given naming convention is considered a resource package.

Our standard resource package is included free with every purchase of the MySkins module. When importing skin package templates downloaded from this site, it is assumed that the standard resource package is already installed and available.

Managing Resource Packages

Installing a resource package for MySkins is easy and straight forward. Every DotNetNuke installation has a sub folder called "Resources" that can be found in the root folder of the installation. When a MySkins module is dropped on a page, a folder called "MySkins" will be created inside the "Resources" folder.

To use a specific resource package, for example our resource package called "Standard", copy the resource package folder to the "MySkins" folder. The resources in the package will be available after the next page refresh. You can copy the folder using FTP or Windows Explorer. Should you not have access to the folder, you can import the resource package through MySkins by going to Edit Resources. Note that when you use Edit Resources, the resource package must be zipped (*.zip) and that the size of the resource package will be restricted to the upload limit of your server. (The Edit Resources functionality is only available to users with super user permissions.)

After copying all the resource packages, the folder structure will look something like this:

[DotNetNuke Root]/Resources/MySkins/Standard
[DotNetNuke Root]Resources/MySkins/Custom Resource Package 1
[DotNetNuke Root]Resources/MySkins/Custom Resource Package 2
...

There is no limit to how many resource packages can be used with MySkins.

Custom Resource Packages

You can create and use your own resource packages with MySkins. Download an example of a resource package to see the folder structure, file types for each sub folder and naming conventions here.

Folder Structure

Note that it is not required for a resource package to contain every folder that you would find in a complete resource package. In other words, it is possible to create a resource package that contains banner images only, or maybe just some extra background patterns. It is important, however, that a resource be placed in the correct folder.

Thumbnails

Each sub folder that contains resources must also contain a "Thumbs" folder. Each resource must have a corresponding thumbnail in the "Thumbs" folder. Thumbnails are 40px X 40px .gif images.

Naming Conventions and File Types

Resources will either be .jpg or .png files. See the example to determine the required file type of each folder.

Resources share a base name with its thumbnail. For example, a full banner might be called "Banner001.jpg" and will have a corresponding thumbnail in the "Thumbs" folder called "Banner001.gif".

Some resources like borders for example consist of multiple files. They will all still share a base name, but each individual file will have a different extension to the base. A banner border could look something like:

Banner/Border/Thumbs/Border001.gif
Banner/Border/Border001_b.png (Bottom)
Banner/Border/Border001_bl.png (Bottom Left)
Banner/Border/Border001_br.png (Bottom Right)
Banner/Border/Border001_l.png (Left)
Banner/Border/Border001_r.png (Right)
Banner/Border/Border001_t.png (Top)
Banner/Border/Border001_tl.png (Top Left)
Banner/Border/Border001_tr.png (Top Right)
